Wim Bex

Wim Bex was born in Sint-Truiden in 1977 and initiated his instrumental studies under the guidance of Mr. Marcel Vandereycken at the music school in Tongeren. Initially on the trumpet, he transitioned to the tenor trombone four years later. Continuing his musical education in Hasselt at the music high school, he later attended the Lemmens Institute in Leuven. Under the influence of his teacher, Mr. Michel Tilkin, Wim made the shift to the bass trombone.

After freelancing for about a dozen years with almost all Belgian and some foreign orchestras, he became a permanent member of the Limburg Symphony Orchestra in Maastricht in 2009. Following the merger with the Brabant Orchestra in 2013, the ensemble is now known as the "philharmonie zuidnederland."

In 2008, he composed his first piece, "Vademecum for Bass Trombone," at the request of and recorded by Geert De Vos. The positive reception of this work propelled his compositional journey, leading to solo pieces for tenor trombone, trumpet, and tuba, all of which have been recorded on CDs.

His most influential mentors in his musical career include Ludo Verjans, Michel Tilkin, and Wim Henderickx. They instilled in him not only a natural and logical approach to a musical score but also emphasized that music should be approached with an open and positive mindset, entirely in service to 'the story behind the notes'.
